VHS Fish Virus Found in Northern Wisconsin

Virus Deteced In Great Lakes

Updated: 11:44 am CDT August 6, 2007

Anglers in northern Wisconsin are dealing with a virus that could cripple the state's billion-dollar fishing industry.

Wildlife officials detected VHS, or viral hemorrhagic septicemia, in the Lake Winnebago chain in May.

The virus poses no threat to humans, but can cause fish to bleed to death.

The virus has already spread to much of the Great Lakes.

Officials estimate that the virus killed hundreds of thousands of freshwater fish in Lake Erie last year.
