Cable Bill Opponents Say Supporters Misled Lawmakers

Bill Would Boost Cable TV Competition

Updated: 12:32 pm CDT July 5,2007

Opponents of legislation designed to create competition in the state's cable TV market expressed anger this week at being included on a list of supporters given to state lawmakers.

Edgewood College professor Cynthia Laitman learned on Tuesday that she had been included as one of hundreds of constituents supporting the bill on a list given to state Sen. Fred Risser, D- Madison. However, last week, she spoke against it at the Democratic State Convention.

A group backing the bill, TV4US, also listed former Madison Mayor Paul Soglin and high-profile lawyer Ed Garvey as supporters when both have criticized the bill.

Soglin and Garvey said that they too are angry.

TV4US director Thad Nation said that people had to submit their names and addresses through a postcard, online or over the phone to get on the list. He said that more than 30,000 people are on it.

Laitman and Soglin said that they didn't do that. Garvey said that an intern's attempt to find out information might have been misconstrued.

Risser -- the legislator who opposes the bill -- said that he now questions all the names on the list.
