MADISON, Wis. -- A provision slipped into the Wisconsin Senate's version of the state budget has some local wineries up in arms. The language would prevent them from shipping directly to stores in Wisconsin and force them to use a distributor to sell their wine to stores.Barneveld vineyard owner Peter Botham said that the measure could "legislate the wineries right out of business in the state."The legislation would effectively end direct mailing of wine to consumers in Wisconsin. If distributors are involved, the additional layer of cost could mean tough times for the state wineries. Many sell directly to retail outlets and ship directly to consumers. The state wine and liquor distributors association is pushing for the provision. Distributors said that it would benefit state consumers by allowing them to receive mail-order wine from a number of other states for the first time.Right now, only California and Oregon can ship to state residents, in addition to Wisconsin wineries.
