Vang Pao Supporters March In Milwaukee

School Board President Suggests Changing New School's Name

Updated: 8:01 am CDT June 12, 2007

Hmong Gen. Vang Pao might be controversial in Madison, but he has many supporters in Milwaukee.

On Monday, hundreds of people marched to the federal courthouse in downtown Milwaukee to protest the charging of Pao, WISC-TV reported.

Pao and nine others are accused in California federal court of supplying Hmong rebels with weapons to overthrow the Laotian government.

Pao, the accused mastermind, is considered among the most respected Hmong leaders in the United States, WISC-TV reported.

On June 18, the Madison school board will reconsider naming the city's newest elementary school after Pao.

On Monday, school board president Arlene Silveira spoke for change.

"This is certainly not a statement against the Hmong community or against the general," said Silveria. "We need to start moving forward with the school and bringing the community back together."
