MAZOMANIE, Wis. -- Mazomanie's nude beach is becoming increasingly popular and the state Department of Natural Resources said that popularity is also bringing increased reports of illegal activity, including drug use and lewd behavior.Longtime beachgoers this weekend said that the problem isn't as bad as some say."It's a relaxing feeling that I can't describe," said nudist Michael McGreevy.McGreevy said that he has been using the Mazomanie beach for 18 summers."I love it here," said McGreevy. "I do everything in my life to extremes and this is one of my passions in life."But DNR officials said that an influx of new visitors is bringing more problems. On Thursday and Friday, law enforcement made five arrests on charges of lewd and lascivious behavior."Most of the changes are from the information we've received regarding sex acts in public, drug use on the beach, and more minor violations," said DNR conservation warden supervisor Jeremy Plautz. The DNR closed off certain wooded areas around the beach and cut nearby trees to open up the area near the beach. Some visitors said that the changes were unnecessary."I've seen more on a regular beach than I have seen on a nude beach," said nudist Chris Doffing."The requirements here are more stringent than on a regular beach," said Doffing. "And all the people care because they're all getting slammed by it. So everybody has a responsibility here."The DNR said the rules are to protect beach patrons."For the most part, there are people down here not causing a whole lot of problems," said Plautz. "There's certainly some people that do come down here with a specific motive in mind."But long-timers like McGreevy said that they don't believe this summer will be any different than years past."No big deal," said McGreevy. "This is business as usual for us, for the mainstream people here. This doesn't affect anything we've done, or do, or continue to do hopefully."The DNR said that the beach has historically been a nude beach since the 1960s. Officials said that they have no intention of prosecuting people for simple nudity, WISC-TV reported.
