Diocese To Announce Fate Of St. Raphael's Cathedral Next Weekend

Cathedral Was Destroyed In 2005

Updated: 11:25 pm CDT June 2, 2007

Madison diocese officials said on Saturday that a decision on what will become of the former St. Raphael's Catholic Cathedral will be made public next weekend.

Bishop Robert Morlino has made a decision on what will become of the historic church, which was destroyed by fire in 2005, and plans to announce it to the public in a ceremony next weekend, WISC-TV reported.

Morlino has been wrestling what to do with the burned-out historic church. He has deliberated on rebuilding the cathedral on the same location or other options.

According to the press release from the diocese, Morlino will lead a procession through downtown Madison next Sunday and at the end of the event at the St. Raphael's site, he'll announce the location of the new cathedral.

Some parishioners have said that they'd like to see the church rebuilt in the same spot. Morlino has said that he needs to consider what would be best for the diocese 100 years from now.

A diocese spokesman said that Morlino recently returned from the Vatican and he needs approval from church officials on rebuilding plans, WISC-TV reported.

The cathedral, which opened in 1850, was gutted after an arson fire erupted on March 14, 2005. During the past three years, the congregation of St. Raphael's has scattered to other churches.

William Connell pleaded no contest in July 2006 to the charge of arson.
