Doyle Calls On Lawmakers To Boost Universities' Funding

Budget Committee To Consider Request

UPDATED: 4:23 pm CDT May 30, 2007

Gov. Jim Doyle is calling on lawmakers to support his plan to increase funding for the University of Wisconsin System, saying that universities need a major investment to remain competitive.

Doyle used an appearance at UW-Madison to try to build support for his plan to spend an additional $225 million on the UW System and financial aid.

The Legislature's budget committee is expected to consider the request in the coming days.

Much of the increase would help the universities maintain their current programs and cover rising costs such as utilities and employees' health care.

Doyle said that giving campuses enough money to cover those costs is critical to keeping them strong.

He said that underfunding those costs -- as lawmakers have in recent budgets -- would lead to cuts in staff, services and opportunities for the system's 160,000 students.
