Wisconsin Spelling Bee Contestant Hopes To Last Longer Than Last Year

Jacobson Tied For 14th Place In 2006

Updated: 4:27 pm CDT May 29, 2007

Isabel Jacobson has one more chance.

packageINTERACTIVE: Virtual Spelling Bee

She heads back to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., this week and because she's 14, it'll be the last time she's eligible for the competition.

Last year, Jacobson left in the seventh round. But since then, she's been improving her knowledge of foreign words and studying up on words used in previous national bees.

Jacobson wants to finish better than last year, when she tied for 14th place.

She has a solid coach in Jeff Kirsch, who has been helping her since September. Kirsch was a finalist as a child in the National Spelling Bee and in 2004 when the National Senior Spelling Bee, which is for spellers 50 and older.

He said that Jacobson has a born talent, but like all spellers, she needs luck.
