The state Department of Natural Resources said that it appears a deadly fish virus has turned up in Lake Michigan.

DNR officials said that a brown trout that died in Lake Michigan and washed ashore near Kewaunee has preliminarily tested positive for viral hemorrhagic septicemia.

It is the first Lake Michigan fish to test positive for VHS, WISC-TV reported.

Experts said the virus, which causes fish to bleed to death, does not pose a risk to humans.
