Nude Beach Crackdown Begins This Weekend

Nearby Trees Were Cut Down Two Months Ago

Law enforcement is cracking down on inappropriate behavior at Mazomanie's nude beach beginning this weekend.

The state Department of Natural Resources said that reports of illegal activity involving drugs, lewd and lascivious behavior and disorderly conduct increased in the beach area last year.

"The complaints are being made by people who use the beach and also it's part of the lower Wisconsin riverway so there's boaters, fishermen, people canoeing past the beach that have also been giving us information and making complaints about some of the things going on there," said Jeremy Plautz, a DNR conservation warden supervisor.

Nearby willow trees were cut down earlier this year to open up the area, WISC-TV reported.

There are also signs posted that tell the public the nearby wooded areas are off-limits to beach users.

"It's a beautiful area of the river and historically, we haven't done anything as far as prosecuting for simple nudity and we don't plan on doing anything different with that this year," said Plautz. "The main goal is to stop the activity that's going on that can be disturbing."

The stepped-up enforcement will start Memorial Day weekend, which also marks the start of heavy beach use, authorities said.
