Marathon County Bans Out-Of-State Firewood

Concerns Persist About Emerald Ash Borer

Updated: 7:35 am CDT May 8, 2007

All out-of-state firewood is banned in Marathon County forests and parks.

The county park commission unanimously approved the rule in time for the camping season, which opened last weekend.

The move was taken because of fears that out-of-state firewood could bring the emerald ash borer into Marathon County.

The insect has destroyed about 20 million trees in the Midwest since 2002.

Campers will be allowed to purchase firewood at Dells of the Eau Claire Park and Big Eau Pleine Park in the county.

Marathon Park doesn't allow campfires.
