Doyle: Smoking Ban Without Taverns Doesn't Make Sense
Tavern League Pushes For Exemption
UPDATED: 11:30 am CDT May 1,

MADISON, Wis. -- Gov. Jim Doyle said on Tuesday that a statewide smoking ban that doesn't include taverns doesn't make sense to him.Doyle is proposing a smoking ban that would prohibit lighting up in all workplaces, restaurants and taverns. However, the powerful Tavern League lobby -- representing the state's 13,000 bar owners -- is pushing for an exemption. The league's lobbyist has said that a statewide ban will not pass the Legislature unless it includes an exemption for taverns.Doyle said in February that he was open to getting less than everything he originally proposed. But on Tuesday, he said that bill has to include the ban on taverns. The governor said that he would be open to looking at a limited phase-in for taverns to be included in the ban.
