A 12th illegally installed device meant to steal customers' card identities was found in a Madison gas pump, police said.
Madison police said a city weights and measures inspector discovered a skimmer in a gas pump Tuesday during a routine inspection at the BP station at 735 E. Washington Ave.
The police department was notified and the device was seized. Police said it will be turned over to the FBI.
Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain said Wednesday that it authorities don't know if the skimmer is connected to two California men arrested last week in connection with other skimmer implants found in the city.
The city inspector told a responding officer he last checked the targeted pump on Nov. 14 and it was skimmer free.
DeSpain said there are many criminals involved in fraudulent card skimming, and skimmers have been found in across the country. The police department encouraged motorists to continue to be vigilant and take precautions such as paying for gas inside the store instead of at the pump.
A card skimmer was also found on a gas pump in DeForest Friday, police said.
