MADISON, Wis. -- Supporters of a proposed statewide ban on smoking said on Wednesday that they wouldn't accept an exemption for taverns.Such an exemption is something Gov. Jim Doyle said that he was open to considering.Democratic state Sen. Fred Risser and Republican Rep. Steve Wieckert said on Wednesday that they wouldn't accept an exemption. Supporters of the ban attending a news conference on the issue erupted in applause when the two said that they'd oppose an exemption for bars."The bill would not be acceptable if we exempt taverns. Taverns are to be covered," said Risser, D-Madison.The proposal unveiled by Doyle in January would ban smoking in all restaurants, workplaces and taverns. Doyle said in February that he was willing to negotiate with those who want an exemption for taverns.Supporters of the bill argue that a statewide ban is needed to ensure uniformity and to protect the health of workers.
