City Ash Trees Inspected For Borer Insect

MADISON, Wis. -- Some local arborists might now be breathing a sigh of relief.A recent survey of 28 ash trees in the city of Madison found no sign of the Emerald Ash Borer, an insect deadly to ash trees, WISC-TV reported.The state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection remains vigilant because the insects have been found 30 miles away in northern Illinois."Probably the most important thing is people just need to stop moving firewood over long distances," said Mick Skwarok, a plant, pest and disease specialist. "Buy (firewood) where you plan to burn it."Infested firewood is a major cause of the spread of the ash borer, officials said.The state has set up a toll free hotline to call if you see a sick tree. The number is 1-800-462-2803.
