Funds Slashed For Tenant Resource Center

TRC Officials Look For Volunteers, Donations

UPDATED: 3:22 pm CDT April 3, 2007

The Tenant Resource Center is taking a big hit to its budget.

The group has helped thousands of area renters resolve disputes with their landlords. Now, it is losing $55,000 in funding from the University of Wisconsin-Madison's student government, which is about 15 percent of its total budget, WISC-TV reported.

TRC officials said the cut means outreach projects on the UW campus will take a direct hit.

"The biggest problem that I see is students not getting things repaired and students not getting their security deposits back," said TRC executive director Brenda Konkel. "I think it's going to affect their quality of life on campus and their pocketbook at the end of the year."

Konkel said that students make up about 20 percent of TRC's clients. The funding cut means the TRC could cut office hours, WISC-TV reported.

Officials said that they're looking for volunteers to help with housing counseling or basic office help.

They said that those who wish to volunteer or donate to the Tenant Resource Center can call 608-257-0143.
