MADISON, Wis. -- Some businesses said that aren't finding what they need in University of Wisconsin graduates.Corporate recruiters have pulled out of the UW in recent years because they said there was a lack of diversity in graduates, WISC-TV reported."We've heard time and time again. Businesses want this in their workforce. They want it in our graduates, and the fact that they continue to recruit here should not be a sign that everything's OK," said Dave Giroux of the Board of Regents. Those complaints are another reason the UW System recently confirmed its commitment to diversity by allowing race to be a factor in admissions.Last fall, minority students made up 11.5 percent of the entire student body, WISC-TV reported."I think every corporation would like a more diverse workforce, as the university and the business school would like a more diverse candidate pool as well," said Diane Upton of the UW Career Center."Just looking at the numbers, I'd say we're not as diverse as we should be," said UW senior Owen Stevenson. With graduation two months away, Stevenson has been hitting the interview circuit hard. He said that he doesn’t think his race is the most important thing he has to offer a business."I'm kind of worried more about how my skills that I've learned here would apply to a job that I'm applying for," said Stevenson.Despite the request for more minorities, the UW School of Business saw a 20 percent increase in recruiters in 2007, WISC-TV reported."They know they're getting high-caliber students when they come here to recruit," Upton said."I can see why they would be a little cautious about coming here, but I think that the school's reputation kind of speaks for itself," said Stevenson.
