MADISON, Wis. -- The future of St. Raphael's Cathedral could depend on the deed.In the original deed for the land, sold to the diocese in 1843 for $1 by Madison founder James Doty, it said the land can be used only for church and school purposes. But according to Jesse Ishikawa, a Madison real estate lawyer with Reinhart, Boerner & Van Deuren, as long as the deed restrictions have not been mentioned in any legal document in 40 years, they expire. The Madison diocese has not yet decided on plans for the church's future. The historic Roman Catholic cathedral in downtown Madison was destroyed by a fire in 2005.
