CHILTON, Wis. -- Steven Avery is not just accused of killing Teresa Halbach, he is also charged with mutilation of a corpse. Tuesday's witnesses were called by prosecutors in an attempt to prove that charge.Witnesses testified they saw Avery dump garbage in a burning barrel outside his trailer the afternoon of Oct. 31, 2005.Later that night, two witnesses testified they saw a bonfire blazing in a burn pit behind Avery's garage."You said that it was a fire. Did you see flames?" special prosecutor Ken Kratz asked."Yes, I did see flames," Avery's brother-in-law Scott Tadych said."Did you notice if anybody was standing in the area or around the fire? Did you notice anybody back there?" Kratz asked."Yes, I did," Tadych said"Do you know the defendant Steve Avery?" Kratz asked."Yes, I do," Tadych said."And did you see Steven Avery standing next to or near that fire?" Kratz asked."Yes, I did," Tadych said.Prosecutors said investigators found the burnt remnants of Halbach's cell phone and camera in Avery's burn barrel and her burnt remains in his burn pit.Another person who took the stand was Avery's nephew, Blaine Dassey, 18.Dassey testified that when he got home from trick-or-treating about 11 p.m. that night, the flames behind his uncle's garage were 4 to 4 feet high. Dassey lived next door on the Avery property. He testified he spotted a person by the fire, but could not say for sure whether it was his uncle. Dassey had earlier told investigators it was his uncle, Steven, who was by the fire.Dassey shared a bedroom with his brother Brendan, who is also charged in the case. Dassey said he couldn't remember whether his brother, Brendan, was in bed when he arrived home from trick-or-treating.
