Parents Want Answers About Mold At Chavez

Special Meeting Set For 7 P.M. Wednesday Night

Updated: 11:04 a.m. CST November 27, 2001

The entire facility at Madison's Cesar Chavez Elementary School is being tested for mold contamination today.

District officials told News 3 that mold has been found behind the baseboards in nine rooms on the school's two floors, including six classrooms.

Since the beginning of the year, students and teachers have been complaining of respiratory illnesses, including kindergartener Bryce Danielson.

His mom told News 3 that she wants answers.

"I would like to know the volume, the quantity and the levels of the mold," Katie Danielson said. "My son's kindergarten room tested highest of all the rooms that were tested in that school. That's what concerns me. I would like some answers."

School officials said students are being moved to classrooms today that are considered safe.

They don't believe the mold is toxic, and said it most likely started growing during construction when a pipe broke, sending water into places it shouldn't be.

News 3 is investigating today and will have more information tonight.
