Falk Looking Into Electronic Monitoring For Inmates

Falk: Monitoring Might Be Alternative To Huber Facility

Posted: 8:10 pm CST January 30, 2007

Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk is investigating whether electronic monitoring would work better than holding inmates in a work-release facility.

Falk was in La Crosse on Tuesday to learn more about that county's program.

Falk said electronic monitoring might be a better alternative to the current Huber Facility, where inmates leave for work in the morning and come back to the jail to stay at night.

"The La Crosse model, which is less expensive in terms of big infrastructure, also is a better surveillance system for inmates during the day. So we may accomplish both -- better public safety at less cost," Falk said.

Falk said Dane County officials will continue to study the electronic monitoring program before deciding on the best solution.
