Sides Debate Nuclear Power At State Capitol

Committee Created To Explore Lifting Nuclear Power Moratorium

At the state Capitol on Thursday, experts battled over the future of nuclear power in the United States and in Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Legislature recently created a new committee to decide whether to lift its moratorium on nuclear power.

Proponents for nuclear power said there are many misconceptions about it and that it is safer for workers and neighbors than people give it credit for.

"Nuclear power is one alternative to meet growing energy demands, and evaluating it with the same criteria with other technologies will help ensure that Wisconsin can meet the needs of its citizens for safe, reliable, affordable and clean electricity," said Lisa Stiles, an advocate for nuclear power.

Those against nuclear power said they fear an accident like those in the past and prefer other methods to meet energy needs.
