Thompson Convicted Of Illegally Steering Contract

MADISON, Wis. -- Former state employee Georgia Thompson reported to prison on Monday after she was convicted this summer of of illegally steering a state contract to a company whose executives gave money to Gov. Jim Doyle's campaign.Thompson is the former state purchasing official who has denied involvement in a scheme to steer a state contract to Adelman Travel Group.A federal jury in Milwaukee convicted Thompson in June of using her position on an evaluation committee to favor Adelman, whose executives donated $20,000 to the governor before and after winning the contract. Thompson was found guilty of two felony fraud charges, WISC-TV reported.Thompson will serve an 18-month sentence at a minimum-security facility for female offenders near Peoria, Ill.Thompson is appealing her conviction, WISC-TV reported.
