Beloit, Kenosha Tribal Casino Proposals Advance

Doyle Would Need To Give Final Approval

UPDATED: 11:34 am CST November 22, 2006

Proposals for off-reservation tribal casinos in Beloit and Kenosha are advancing.

A U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs officials said that regional staff members of the agency have completed environmental reviews.

BIA regional environmental scientist Herb Nelson said that a broader regional review of the overall proposal for the Beloit casino will likely be completed this week or next week in Minneapolis.

The plan for the joint project of the St. Croix and Bad River Chippewa tribes would then go to Washington, D.C., for final federal approval.

Nelson said that a time frame for completion of the regional review of the entire Kenosha plan by the Menominee tribe has not been given.

Gov. Jim Doyle gets the final say on the projects, if they receive federal approval.
