EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- Some Eau Claire firefighters could be banned from smoking while others won't be.The Police and Fire Commission is expected to discuss hiring regulations for new firefighters during a meeting on Thursday. Those rules would demand that new firefighters refrain from using tobacco.Acting Fire Chief Ed Kassing said that current firefighters would be exempt from the rule.Kassing said that the new hiring policy is intended to decrease disability claims. He said that many fire departments have a no-smoking rule in place for new hires.The chief said that only a few Eau Claire firefighters use tobacco.
