Area Bar Might Be Haunted

Paranormal Research Group Trying To Prove It With Science

Spooky stories and sightings have sparked an all-out ghost hunt at the Ohio Tavern on Madison's East Side.

The bar, built in 1913 as a bank, was reportedly a speakeasy. It became the third tavern in Madison to be licensed after prohibition. A person supposedly hung himself inside the bar in the 1940s. It was finally bought by its current owner in 1993. Stories of hauntings go back decades and touch nearly all of the regulars, WISC-TV reported.

"I'm taking my pills with cranberry juice and all of a sudden right there the things starting flying off," said Roger Horge, describing the day that he saw trinkets flying off the shelf above the bar. "I'm looking and looking and said, 'Wait a minute, I didn't even go out last night.'"

There are so many stories, a log near the register keeps track. Even more astonishing is how many people share in the stories.

Terry Sims, the current owner, had an experience herself as she was looking to buy the bar. She said, "The bartender set the beer out and while her back was to the bar four or five cupboards opened up behind her and I looked at her and she said, "that's just our ghost.'"

Thirteen-year bartender Kimi Matz has seen some of the same things but she doesn't feel afraid at all.

"It's a very playful feeling. Nothing where your hair stands up, just a, "yeah I know you're here.'"

These stories along with pictures taken during a mysterious fire three years ago, give paranormal researchers a case.

"It holds great promise coupled with historical background on the building," said Wayne Hackler, founder of Madison Researchers into the Paranormal. "I have a good feeling we'll come out with good results."

Note: On Monday night, the team spent hours in the Ohio Tavern taking pictures and readings. Tune in to WISC-TV on Tuesday night at 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. for the results.
