MADISON, Wis. -- The recent probation of the University of Wisconsin-Madison marching band cast a shadow over the weekend's homecoming excitement."I think it's a shame to see all the enthusiasm of the team get caught up in the emotion of a controversy," said UW fan Doug Diemer from Waunakee.Despite a week where the chancellor placed the group on probation for sexualized behavior and hazing, some of the biggest supporters, their parents, say they are still proud."They're awesome," said Cindy Federwitz. "They work hard. They're so much more deserving than what they've been treated like this week."Federwitz's daughter is a junior in the marching band."These few kids that we've been talking about all week, maybe we need to do something with them," she said. "Let's treat it on an individual basis. Let's not go after the whole band."Despite the bad behavior reported on earlier in the week, UW fans cheered loudly for both the team and band.Band parents said given the challenges that lie ahead, it will only keep the band members stepping even higher."I just can't help but believe that they're going to come out of it stronger and better than they ever have before," said Randy Kleinhaus. Kleinhaus's son is a junior in the marching band. The chancellor has not specified how long the probation for the band will last.Currently the band has no more road show trips this season unless the Badgers go to a bowl game.
