As a possible spiritual successor to the popular Toyota Supra, the Japanese automaker showed off a new concept of a sports car Monday at the Detroit Auto Show.

The Toyota FT-1 is just a concept for now, but company leaders say they invested two years and a lot of passion in designing the sports car.

The name itself stands for "Future Toyota" though it was inspired by Toyota sports cars of the past. “Our team was heavily influenced by Toyota’s sports car past, especially Celica and Supra, and we sought to capture some of that history," said Alex Chen, the chief designer at Toyota's Calty Design Research.

Few specifications about the car have been revealed, but Toyota said the car has a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration with a heads-up display for the driver that's inspired by fighter jets.

While the car is far from production-ready, anyone who plays Gran Turismo 6 can get a free download of the car starting on Tuesday.
