MADISON, Wis. -

State consumer officials are warning Wisconsin residents about a unique phone scam that promises unclaimed Powerball payouts.

Callers tell potential victims they’re eligible for the prizes, and all they have to do is pick some numbers.

The scammers call back saying the person they're talking to won millions of dollars and a car; but this scam isn’t unique in what the scammers say, it’s all about what information they ask for.

“They’re being asked for general financial information, what’s the value of your home, what’s the value of the investments you have? So those typical scam red flags we see, and the request for personal identifying information or banking info, those don’t exist,” said Jerad Albracht, with the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.

DATCP officials said this could be the first step in a series of scams to get more information from customers.
