Unemployment dropped in most of Wisconsin's largest cities and counties in August.

The state Department of Workforce Development reported Wednesday that unemployment fell or stayed the same in 28 of the state's 32 largest cities from July to August. Racine had the highest unemployment of any city at 6.7 percent, which was down from 7.1 percent in July.

Unemployment rates also dropped or stayed the same in 66 of 72 counties.

Dane County had the lowest unemployment rate at 2.8 percent. Menominee County had the highest at 8.6 percent.

The local rates aren't seasonally adjusted so they can't be compared to the state unemployment rate, which stood at 4.2 percent in August, unchanged from July and below the national average of 4.9 percent.
