Fitchburg Continues Down Smoking Ban Path

Bar Owner Says, 'It's About Your Rights'

Fitchburg business owners attended an informational meeting Thursday to hear more about plans to ban smoking in Fitchburg bars and restaurants.

Some said they want to wait and find out how Madison businesses are affected after a year under the ban. Others said no matter what, they don't want one. Madison taverns went smoke-free July 1.

"It'll affect your business," said Bill McMahon, owner of Monkey Shines. "You'll lose customers. This thing to me isn't a fact of smokers/nonsmokers. It's about your rights."

Chris Peterson, owner of the Pancake Café and Country Inn and Suites said a ban wouldn't affect his businesses.

"I am a nonsmoking establishment," Peterson said. "I have 70 rooms at the Country Inn and Suites that is all nonsmoking. Also both of my restaurants are nonsmoking."

Some Fitchburg alderpeople attended the meeting and talked about ways to make a level playing field for all businesses -- no matter where they're located. Some worry about losing smoking customers to neighboring communities that do not have a smoking ban.
