MADISON, Wis. -- American Transmission Company wants to build a high-voltage power line from La Crosse to Madison.

American Transmission said the 150-mile line would link with a line proposed by Xcel Energy and other utilities that would cross Minnesota and connect in Wisconsin near La Crosse.

ATC officials said the more efficient transmission line would offset the need for approximately $140 million in lower-voltage upgrades in western Wisconsin communities.

ATC is asking for the public's input on the project at several open houses this fall.

ATC said construction on the 345-kilovolt Badger Coulee line from La Crosse to Madison could begin in 2015 if regulatory approval is given by the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin.
