Local Walgreen's Aim To Add Beer, Wine To Shelves

Company Seeks Liquor Licenses In Madison

A popular chain known more for its pharmacy hopes to reintroduce alcohol to its stores' inventory in the Madison area.

Not since the early 1990s has Walgreen's stocked shelves with alcoholic drinks, but the company said that customer demand is why Walgreen's is hoping to offer more convenience to its shoppers.

Verona shoppers are already seeing beer at the city's Walgreens. In Madison, three West Side stores are applying for liquor licenses on Wednesday night. The city's Alcohol License Review Committee continued to discuss Walgreen's applications late into the night.

Most Walgreen's shoppers say they welcome the change.

"It certainly impacts the way I see the company," said shopper Alissa Nolden. "But overall, I don't think it would have any ripple effect throughout the community."

"So, I think we should look at each location and determine whether there is a negative impact, rather than making a blanket policy statement about whether a Walgreen's or a Target should be eligible to sell liquor," said Alder Michael Schumacher. "And remember, they're only selling wine and beer."

Walgreen's move to reintroduce alcohol to its store shelves as part of a national strategy. The company said that part of the reasoning behind this move is due to other competing pharmacy chains offering alcohol for sale as well.
