Common Council OKs New Target Store For Hilldale Mall

City Commission Approved Plan

Updated: 5:55 pm CST March 3, 2010

The Madison Common Council approved a proposal Tuesday night to build a new Target store near Hilldale Mall on the city's West Side.

The vote was overwhelmingly in favor of the 155,000-square-foot facility filling the empty lot behind the mall.

Store officials said they hope to break ground yet this spring and open by next summer.

The project has sparked controversy with some area residents expressing concerns over the possibility of the store going into the open area off University Avenue. At the same time, some retailers have said they welcome the adition, WISC-TV reported.

Last month, the Madison Planning Commission also approved the plan.
