Shopping Season Not Over

Stores, Shoppers Gear Up For Returns

While Christmas might be over for this year, Christmas shopping is far from over.

Many folks are spending the days after the holiday back at the malls and stores to return gifts and take advantage of post-holiday sales.

The week leading up to Christmas day had been extremely busy for retailers. They got a break on the holiday, but the following morning morning, the rush started all over again, WISC-TV reported.

Maybe Santa forgot a few things or didn't bring exactly what was on the list. There are plenty of reasons to head back to the stores, the day after Christmas.

"We actually are buying some Wii games, returned a couple dinosaurs we got from grandma and grandpa. Didn't realize that Santa had brought a couple dinosaurs,” said Krista Brown, who was shopping the day after Christmas.

The week after Christmas could account for as much as 15 percent of the season's sales nationwide, officials said.

"We prepare like we have in years past where we staff every register we have on our service desk for the peak times during the day and try to hit that right on the head," said Tyler Knudtson, an executive team leader at Target on Madison's West Side.

Shoppers are taking advantage of discounted Christmas items and purchase accessories for gifts received Christmas morning.

"A lot of folks got the big name item yesterday, the Wii, the Xbox, things like that and now, they need the games to go with it or the extra controller so they can play with their friends," said Knudtson.

"(My boys) just got an Xbox 360 yesterday and we only have one game for it, so they had to come out and buy another game,” said Nicolette Timberlake of Oregon.

And then, there are gift cards.

"We have a lot of gift cards to spend, so we're going to go to Barnes and Noble and a couple other gift cards,” said Timberlake.

"Obviously the gift cards are given in the days leading up to Christmas, so that kind of extends our holiday season beyond what it used to. It goes into the first or second week of January now with people spending those gift cards,” said Knudtson.

Santa's job is done.

Anything else is up to the shoppers.

"We're pretty much done. We're just going to pick out some new stuff," said Brown.

Target on Madison’s West Side expects returns to be two to three times more than a typical day, but the timing of Christmas this year could help.

Because Christmas fell on a Friday, shoppers have the entire weekend -- two days -- to get returns and shopping done before having to head back to work.
