MADISON, Wis. -- State officials hope to roll out a rebate program to boost the sale of new high-efficiency appliances. The state is set to get more than $5 million dollars by the Department of Energy by Nov. 30 for the program. But some businesses are already rolling out their own incentives. Brothers Main TV and Appliance isn’t waiting for the state-run rebate program to kick in. The store is already offering a discount on new purchases. But co-owner Bill Graves had certainly gotten calls about the rebate.“They want to know what's available, money-wise, rebate-wise, from the government for them," said Graves. While the incentive program seems to be a lot like the Cash for Clunkers program there are differences."It is not a program where people are going to haul in their old refrigerator or dishwasher to get the incentive on the new product; it is a little bit different," said Sarah Van de Grift with Focus On Energy.Van de Grift said the rebate is wide-ranging and aims to increase the purchase of new Energy-Star Qualified appliances. Rebates will range from $25-$250 depending on the appliance."It's not a giant incentive like the Cash for Clunkers was offering,” said Van de Grift, “but hopefully one that helps offset some of that first cost for people and encourages to make some upgrades now while the funding is available."The program will also require proof that you’ve recycled an appliance with refrigerant. Focus On Energy said the program might not be for everyone."We've had people call and say, 'Should I repair my clothes washer or wait?' I would suggest to people that if something is broken today, they probably should just go ahead and replace it today," said Van de Grift.Something else to keep in mind: If you buy now, you won’t get a rebate later because the program is not retroactive. Even with the differences, Brothers Main says any incentives will help."Right now, things are promotionally driven and this is, well, a different kind of promotion and I think it'll help," said Graves.Focus On Energy works with eligible Wisconsin residents and businesses to install energy efficient projects. But in this case, they say this rebate program will be available to any Wisconsin resident with any fuel type, which is normally not the case.To learn more about the program, visit here.
