State BBB Warns Consumers About Jackson Purchases

Group Warns Of Price Gouging, Counterfeit Items

Posted: 9:17 am CDT June 27, 2009

Consumers should be cautious buying music, videos or memorabilia of the late Michael Jackson.

The Wisconsin Better Business Bureau said the sudden death of the king of pop is likely to produce price gouging, counterfeit items and other scams.

The group said that on Thursday morning, before Jackson died, a guitar supposedly signed by the artist was on sale on eBay. It had bids of several hundred dollars, but after his death the offer shot up to $1,400.

The bureau said people wanting to buy a CD of Jackson's music should be patient. Many retailers will be sold out in coming days because of Jackson's death.

And the bureau advised that when buying a piece of autographed memorabilia, people should make sure it comes with a real certificate of authenticity.
