'Safety Saturday' Comes To Farmers' Market

Officials Hoped Lessons Left Lasting Impression

Posted: 12:16 am CDT June 14,2009

During this weekend's Dane County Farmers' Market, local emergency responders reached out to the community in the name of "Safety Saturday."

Dane County emergency crews showed off some of their equipment and some interactive displays that taught various safety lessons.

One display showed the potentially devastating results of a car crash at just five miles per hour. The simulation featured a crash dummy not wearing a seat belt.

Officials said they hope the day has a lasting effect.

"Putting on a seatbelt or wearing a bicycle helmet, you want to do it in an atmosphere that's fun, so that they do feel like it's part of the fun activity they're doing," said Eric Dahl of the Madison Fire Department.

Saturday's event featured displays from the Madison Fire Department, along with more than 20 other public and private organizations in Dane County.
