Economy May Hurt Mother's Day Sales

Consumers Limiting Spending

Moms shouldn't expect to get both flowers and chocolates on Mother's Day this year. Analysts say that the troubled economy is expected to keep spending in check.

Analysts don't predict a sharp drop-off in spending this year, but expect it to be lighter. They say rising food and gas prices might prompt scaled-back spending and even typically safe restaurants and florists are worried.

Rosalie Pryor of Cincinnati said she wants just a card from her 11 children. She said some of them are working two jobs just to pay the bills.

Research analyst Ken Perkins said he doubts the economic stimulus packages that started arriving last week would be earmarked for Mother's Day gifts.
