JANESVILLE, Wis. -- Rock County shoppers will see a something extra on their sales receipts come next spring.

On Tuesday, the Rock County Board of Supervisors passed a new county-wide sales tax hike.

The half-percent increase in sales tax makes the county's rate 5.5 percent, WISC-TV reported.

The board voted in favor of the tax by a 19-10 margin.

Officials said that it's expected to bring in more than $7 million into the county, which they said will be used to lower the tax levy and help fund expansion at University of Wisconsin-Rock County.

County supervisors had turned down similar tax resolutions for the past four years, WISC-TV reported.

Shopper Elizabeth Crookshanks said that she doesn’t like the increase and thinks it could make purchasing big-ticket items an issue for some people.

"If it would have been 5.5 percent, I guess I would've tried to go even lower on basically looking for a TV because of the fact that money is tight, and if you're spending that much on a television, it's pretty hard to try and keep within a certain amount," Crookshanks said.

The sales tax increase will take effect in April 2007. The long lead time is so the state Department of Revenue can process all the paperwork and implement the tax, WISC-TV reported.
