Vlad Beaned In Head During Angels Game

Posted: 2:06 am EDT September 21, 2004

Anaheim Angels outfielder Vladimir Guerrero was drilled on the left side of his head by a pitch from Mariners pitcher Ryan Franklin, forcing him out of Monday's 5-2 win in the first inning.

Guerrero was on his back for a few minutes before being helped off the field by trainers. He was taken to the hospital for precautionary X-rays, but was okay and returned to the dugout by the seventh inning.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia took umbrage with the beaning and shouted in Franklin's direction from the dugout steps. Franklin yelled back and had to be restrained by teammates.

Scioscia was eventually ejected and both benches were warned.

Curtis Pride took over for Guerrero as a pinch-runner and remained in the game, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Guerrero, an American League MVP candidate, is hitting .328 with 32 homers and 114 RBI in his first season with the Angels, who trail Oakland by 2 1/2 games for first place in the AL West. They also are 4 1/2 games behind Boston for the wild card.
