Kansas City Royals (25-52) At St. Louis Cardinals (43-34), 8:10 P.m.
(Sports Network) - The St. Louis Cardinals will try to continue their recent dominance over the Kansas City Royals when the two Missouri clubs get together tonight at Busch Stadium for the opener of a three-game series. The Cardinals swept a three-game set from the Royals in Kansas City in May and have won 10 of the last 11 meetings in the I-70 Series. St. Louis also owns a 36-22 record against KC since the advent of interleague play in 1997. However, the Royals are the team playing the better ball at the moment. Kansas City comes in having won seven of its last 10 games, while the Cardinals had lost a season-high eight in a row before defeating Cleveland on Wednesday. St. Louis snapped its longest losing streak in 18 years by rallying for a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn a 5-4 victory over the Indians. Aaron Miles scored the winning run on a throwing error by Tribe shortstop Jhonny Peralta. Miles added an RBI double in the ninth while Scott Rolen finished 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored for the Cardinals, who ended their longest slide since dropping eight straight from July 4-15, 1988. Jason Isringhausen (2-3) got the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief. Starter Chris Carpenter pitched a strong game, giving up just one run and five hits with a walk and four strikeouts in seven innings of work. Former Royal Jeff Suppan will try to give St. Louis a winning streak when he takes the mound tonight. The veteran righty has pitched very well in the new Busch Stadium this season, posting a 4-1 record with a 3.22 earned run average in eight starts. Suppan has received a no decision in four of his last five outings. He beat Colorado on June 17 after allowing two runs and five hits over 7 2/3 innings, then gave up three runs and nine hits in a five-inning stint at Detroit last Saturday. The 31-year-old, who pitched for Kansas City from 1998-2002, is just 1-3 with a 5.40 ERA in five career appearances (four starts) against his former club. That lone win came back in May, when Suppan held the Royals to two runs over six innings as St. Louis cruised to a 10-3 victory. Kansas City had won seven of eight before dropping the final two contests of a three-game series at Cincinnati. In Thursday's finale, Adam Dunn lined a two- out tie-breaking RBI double in the eighth inning as the Reds came through with a 6-5 win. Doug Mientkiewicz was 2-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored for the Royals, while Tony Graffanino knocked in two runs in defeat. Rookie Bobby Keppel started on the hill for Kansas City and was rocked. The big right-hander lasted just 2 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on five hits. Elmer Dessens (4-7) picked up the loss in relief. Brandon Duckworth will make his fourth start as a Royal since being acquired from the Pittsburgh organization earlier this month. The right-hander notched his first victory of the season Saturday against Milwaukee despite surrendering five runs and 10 hits over five innings. Duckworth, who is 1-1 with a 4.96 ERA over his three starts since the trade, is 0-1 with a 7.97 ERA in seven career appearances (three starts) against St. Louis. Kansas City is a respectable 8-7 in interleague games this season, while the Cardinals have struggled to a 4-8 mark versus the AL.
