Tucked among downtown New Glarus’s quaint Swiss-themed storefronts, restaurants and hotel is a family-owned shop that incorporates the best of rustic style with of-the-moment finds. Hutch + Hide opened in April 2016 and has been quietly humming along as a must-stop for locals and tourists coming through town, say owners Tory and Kelsy Hutchison. The shop’s moniker is a nod to the family’s last name and their love of cowhide rugs, which are scattered throughout the space.
The boutique is stocked with heritage brands (Woolrich blankets, Minnetonka moccasins for kids and adults and Stormy Kromer hats), home goods (dishtowels, candles and coasters) and an assortment of baby and toddler clothing, toys, accessories and shoes. Kelsy’s keen eye is evident on the buying side, and all merchandise is displayed on Tory’s rugged, rustic furniture pieces, boxes and fixtures. Tory also designs custom-made bars and cabinets for customers.
Kelsy’s family owns Roughing It In Style, and it was at the store’s Madison location where she and Tory both worked for several years before deciding to start their own shop to spend more time with their two young children. Two-year-old Shay will likely skip through Hutch + Hide during a visit, and baby Tristan models all of the store’s adorable baby clothing.
“We get a lot of tourists coming to town for the beer and food,” says Kelsy. “So we try to carry a little something for everyone.”
