Located on his family’s farm in Blue Mounds, Kyle LaFond’s American Provenance is a line of apothecary products made with all-natural essential oils, coconut oil, shea butter and more. As a former middle school science teacher, LaFond jokes he was inspired to make safer, natural body-care products after smelling a “chemical fog of Axe Body Spray and other products” from his students in the hallways.
He founded American Provenance in 2015, and the company is growing. Find men’s and women’s deodorants, lip and skin care, leather balm and, not surprisingly, a beard balm. Names like Firepits & Flannels and Horseshoes & Hand Grenades exude coolness, and hand-drawn label artwork by LaFond’s tattoo-artist friend Andrew Holder lend each product cache. LaFond and his crew hand-make the products in a converted machine shed on his grandfather’s farm.
“It’s nice to be here and extending the legacy my grandfather set in place. It’s wonderful to kind of walk in his footsteps every day—I can feel his presence out here,” he says. American Provenance’s products are carried at 40 Midwest HyVees (with full distribution to all 250 stores soon), co-ops in Wisconsin, through the Hometown Pharmacy Network and specialty stores. The products are also at 50 Whole Foods stores in the Midwest.
