This editorial board is going to look for every opportunity to promote bridging the divisions affecting our nation right now and that means avoiding most expressions of fear, anger, rejection or dismissal of the feelings of our fellow citizens.
But we are also going to support reasoned and thoughtful efforts to continue ensuring the safety and rights of all citizens.
And with that in mind we strongly support the city of Madison and Madison Police Department's commitment to policies regarding immigrants in our community.
In our minds there is nothing controversial or confrontational in city officials' statements of priorities.
Very simply they are, in the words of Mayor Paul Soglin, a commitment to protecting the "respect and dignity of all people within the community." That's what Madison is. It's who we are and what we stand for. Understand that, and from there we can talk.
