For more than 125 years the chief justice of the Wisconsin Supreme Court has been the long-serving justice, the senior member of the Court. The statute enshrined in the state constitution has served the state well without complaint. Until now.
A desire by some to remove current Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson from serving as chief justice has led to an effort to amend the constitution to allow the justices themselves to elect their chief. It's all politics. There are people who do not like Justice Abrahamson and this is one way to blunt her influence.
First of all it's bad politics. But more importantly it is unnecessary and falls far short of the threshold for amending the state constitution. We urge a NO vote on Wisconsin Referendum Question 1 next Tuesday.
