Telephone and Data Systems has employees who seem to like where they are. The turnover rate is 8.7 percent.
TDS, a Fortune 500 company with corporate headquarters in Madison, contributes $9,000 annually toward an undergraduate degree and $12,000 annually toward a graduate degree for employees who have been with the company for at least a year.
"A lot of people come here and stay because of the support and the time the leadership spends with you," says Cynthia Prest, human resources manager. She says the company promotes from within for leadership positions 86 percent of the time when there's an opening.
TDS employs 10,500 nationwide and 380 in Dane County, but doesn't surrender a family atmosphere, says Vicki Kampmeier, director of human resources and administration.
"One of our leaders, Kurt Thaus, has 215 people reporting to him and he knows everyone by name," she says.
The TDS network includes U.S. Cellular, TDS Telecom and the Suttle Straus printing company in Waunakee.
