For the families, it’s a meeting—prior to and after a loved-one’s death—which guides them through the funeral and the details surrounding this sensitive time.
For employees, it’s knowing that they matter in a supportive workplace environment. Staff members take no more than two weekend on-call assignments per month, a perk they say stresses the company’s concern for employees’ personal time. Yvonne Slonaker, a managing funeral director, says a bonus is that the company is willing to slot its employees into a role that fits their skills. “We’re given what we need to do our jobs better because we’re dealing with families at their lowest point,” says Jeff Olson, managing funeral director at the University Avenue location.
