MADISON, Wis. -- More than half a million people have signed up for Wisconsin's new telemarketer no call list. The state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection expects the number of people participating to reach 1.5 million people. The state fielded 11,000 phone calls from residents signing up for the new "do-not-call list" during the first two hours the number was open last month. After dialing the toll free number or going on line, callers will be asked for their telephone number and zip code. No other information will be requested. The automated system will confirm registration.People are advised to call in the evening or on weekends to cut down on busy signals. Online registration is recommended now."We purposely created a four-month window for sign up before the program actually starts," said Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection Secretary Jim Harsdorf. "Consumers have until Dec. 1 to register and can register anytime after that to get on the updated list."People stay on the list for two years before having to re-register.The list is free for those who want to get on it. The telemarketers have to pay for it.To get on the list, call (866) 966-2255. For more information, go online to https://nocall.wisconsin.gov/web/default.asp.Being on the list won't prevent you from getting calls from your doctor or pharmacist, or any charities -- only companies trying to sell you something.
