Donna's Apple Tart

This is an impressive looking dessert that is fairly low in calories and easy to make. The most time consuming part is the peeling and slicing of the apples. I knew the recipe was a keeper, when my husband asked for a second piece. He is not a dessert lover but he really liked this one.

  • 1 (9 inch) prepared pie crust
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup Splenda or an additional ¼ cup sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 3 large or 6 small (about 2 pounds) baking apples, peeled and sliced
  • butter spray
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place pie crust on large, rimmed baking sheet. Combine the sugar, Splenda, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Sprinkle 3 tablespoons of the sugar mixture on the pie crust dough. Arrange apple slices, in a single layer, in a circle, on top of the dough, working from the outside edge of the dough to the center. Sprinkle apple slices with remaining sugar mixture. Spray lightly with butter spray. Bake for 40-60 minutes or until apples are tender and crust is brown. While apples are baking, combine honey and vanilla. If honey is thick, warm it briefly in the microwave. When tart is done, remove from oven and brush honey mixture on top. This is best served warm.

Note: Choose a good baking apple such as Golden Delicious for this recipe.
